PQQ
Provides a bit of mitochondrial exercise stimulus chemically.
Oral — 10–20 mg daily oral supplement alongside peptide regimens
What It Is
PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) is a redox cofactor often grouped with peptides for its mitochondrial benefits. It is an antioxidant that stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis — essentially encouraging the growth of new mitochondria in cells.
Mechanism
Animal studies showed PQQ supplementation elevates PGC-1α (the master regulator of mitochondrial creation) and leads to increased number of mitochondria and improved mitochondrial function. In mice, PQQ reduced triglycerides and improved fertility and brain function; in humans, small studies found improved VO2 max and endurance after PQQ (likely via better mitochondrial efficiency). It is part of the "Mitochondrial Augmentation" stack that may include MOTS-c (signals mitochondria), NAD (fuels mitochondria), PQQ (grows mitochondria), and CoQ10 (improves mitochondrial electron transport).
How Dr. Emer Uses It
Emer often recommends PQQ as an oral supplement (10–20 mg daily) alongside peptide regimens — especially for those focused on brain health or muscle endurance (e.g. biohackers trying to improve their exercise performance or executives battling fatigue). PQQ is very safe; it's found in foods like kiwi and human breast milk. Because it's not a peptide, it doesn't require injection — which is attractive for patients who prefer pills. Use cases: older patients who have low endurance or high inflammatory burden (PQQ also lowers CRP and IL-6 in studies), and those who cannot exercise much.
Key Benefits
- ✓Stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC-1α elevation — grows new mitochondria
- ✓Improves VO2 max and endurance via enhanced mitochondrial efficiency
- ✓Reduces triglycerides and improves metabolic markers
- ✓Lowers CRP and IL-6 — anti-inflammatory benefit in aging
- ✓Supports brain function and cognitive performance
- ✓Oral supplement — no injection required, ideal for needle-averse patients

Safety & Considerations
PQQ is very safe; it is found in foods like kiwi and human breast milk. At higher doses it can occasionally cause mild insomnia (likely from the energy boost) or vivid dreams. No significant adverse issues have been noted in trials. Because it is not a peptide, it does not require injection. Generally well-tolerated across all patient populations.
